What Is Orthopaedics?
Orthopaedics revolves around the study, diagnosis of, and treatment of
problems related to the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic doctors focus
on joint, ligament, and tendon issues and usually treat conditions including
joint pain, broken bones, injuries to soft tissue, back and neck pain,
sports injuries, congenital musculoskeletal abnormalities, and carpal
tunnel syndrome. Some orthopaedists specialize in areas such as sports
medicine or back disorders, while others treat any issue arising in the
musculoskeletal system.
What to Expect When Visiting an Orthopaedist
To determine whether there has been an actual injury or disorder, your
orthopaedist will first conduct tests using manual examination, medical
history, and then proper screenings and testing such as X-rays and CT
scans to determine the injury or problem.
Depending on the injury, some treatments can be done immediately at the
first appointment. If you are suffering from a broken bone, the orthopaedist
may be able to set it immediately. If you are suffering from arthritis
or some other related disorder that cannot be treated by manipulation
of the muscle system, your doctor may prescribe you medications and discuss
lifestyle changes designed to decrease pain. Orthopaedic physicians also
often prescribe a course of physical therapy designed to strengthen your
musculoskeletal system and correct any malfunctions that currently exist.

Orthopaedic Surgery
If an injury is particularly severe, your orthopaedist may recommend surgery
to correct the abnormality. Orthopaedic surgeons have specialized training
to surgically repair broken bones and torn muscles or ligaments it be required.
Joint Replacement Surgery
The purpose of joint replacement surgery is to replace the nonfunctional
joint with a manufactured joint that will work properly, reducing pain,
and returning ease of movement. While there are many differed prosthetics
that can be used, doctors usually consider your lifestyle and current
medical condition to determine which is best for you.
