What Is Neurology?
Neurology is the study and treatment of diseases and disorders affecting
the human nervous system. Neurologists focus on understanding the human
nervous system and how it works to treat diseases. They specialize in
the organs that make up the nervous system including the brain, spinal
cord, muscles and the nervous nets throughout them. In order to determine
health, neurologists often use tests that measure a combination of muscle
strength, movement, balance, sensation, memory, speech, reflexes, language
and cognitive abilities to judge the health of the nervous system.
Treatments We Provide
Neurology treats any part of the nervous system that is malfunctioning
and seeks to restore neurological function and health. This can mean treating
anything from a brain issue to a neurological issue in an appendage. Neurological
diseases and disorders can affect a wide variety of bodily actions and
functions from motor functions to cognition, to speech and language. Neurological
conditions can be broken up into those that originate in the central nervous
system or the peripheral nervous system. However, the systems are so connected
that a disorder in either will affect all parts of the nervous system.
Our neurological specialists treat a wide variety of neurological conditions
including:
Diseases of the central nervous system
Diseases affecting cognitive function such as Alzheimer’s
Diseases of the brain and peripheral nervous system
Speech and language disorders
Stroke
Cerebrovascular diseases
Epilepsy and seizure disorders
Diseases affecting movement:
Lou Gehrig’s disease
Multiple sclerosis
Parkinson’s disease
Cerebral palsy
Headaches
In order to diagnose and propose a course of treatment for these and other
neurological conditions, our specialists use a combination of CAT scans,
EEG, EMG/NCV, lumbar puncture and MRI scans to look into the nervous system
and attempt to determine the cause of the malfunction or disorder. Treatments
for neurological disorders are varied and can involve anything from physical
therapy and lifestyle changes to surgery or medication.
