Mammogram Guidelines and Self-Referrals

At Infirmary Health, we’re committed to helping women take charge of their breast health. Regular mammograms are one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early, when it’s easiest to treat.

The self-referral for mammograms process at Infirmary Health is only for patients who do not have a healthcare provider. If you have a provider and an order to receive a mammogram, call the Infirmary Central Scheduling Department at 251-435-2255.

General Mammography Screening Guidelines:

  • Start screening at age 40
  • Women at high-risk should begin before the age of 40
  • Screening should be annual unless your provider recommends differently

Mammography Self-Referral Guidelines:

At Infirmary Health, patients can self-refer for annual or bi-annual mammograms without a physician's order on the MyIHChart.

You may not self-refer if you have the following:

  • A healthcare provider
  • Concerns such as breast lumps, pain, redness, etc.
  • Breast cancer diagnosis
  • Received previous breast surgery or biopsy within the last three years (prior to scheduling your appointment)
  • Under the age of 40
