What Is Triage?

Triage is the method by which medical personnel in an emergency room determine the seriousness of your injuries and whether you need immediate care. Since the goal of our emergency room team is to protect life overall, we treat those with life-threatening conditions first. While life threatening injuries are treated first, our team cares about your health and will meet your medical needs.

What Is Emergency Medicine?

The American Board of Emergency Medicine describes emergency medicine as the immediate evaluation, care, stabilization and disposition of a diversified group of patients in response to serious or life-threatening illness or injury to avoid further death or infirmity.

Injuries that we often deal with in our emergency rooms include:

  • Cardiac events
  • Serious injuries such as broken bones
  • Severe lacerations.
  • Strokes
  • Seizures
  • Severe vomiting
  • Unconscious patients

What to Do If You or a Loved One is Having a Medical Emergency

If you or a loved one is suffering from a medical emergency, remain calm and follow these steps to ensure the best result for you and your family member. In the event of a medical emergency:

  • Stay calm.
  • Call 911. Immediately ensure that either you or another person at the scene contacts 911. Once 911 is contacted, follow their instructions on how to best handle the situation.
  • Be Observant: attempt to observe the scene and gather as much information as possible about the medical incident, the individuals’ symptoms, the surroundings of the incident and the medical history of the patient. All of this will be useful to medical personnel when they arrive and could result in the patient’s life being saved.

If you or a loved one are suffering from a medical emergency, call 911 immediately.
