In 2025, the Mobile Infirmary Internal Medicine Residency Program is a
piloting a residency track program. We are offering two positions:
PRIMARY CARE TRACK (2405140M0)
Residents will begin their residency program with an immersion experience
in our Continuity Clinic. During the residency program, faculty will cover
a curriculum rooted in caring for patients with chronic diseases. We use
the Yale Curriculum as our base for this. During the second and third
years of residency, primary care residents will be responsible for teaching
their colleagues some of these topics. Residents will also have opportunities
to rotate with primary care physicians in the Mobile community. Residents
will be assigned to clinic-level leadership meetings and will assume more
responsibility throughout their residency program. Residents will also
be provided with the opportunity to conduct research in the clinic and
help lead continuity residents in quality improvement projects. In year
three, residents will be allowed to serve as acting Ambulatory Chief Resident
under the supervision of our Chief Residents and ambulatory attending
physicians. They will lead ambulatory morning reports, daily briefs, etc.
Residents will be responsible for co-leading or leading a longitudinal
community service endeavor. Presently, our residency program has a formal
relationship with Victory Health Partners which provides high-quality
care to employed and uninsured patients. We also have a relationship with
Dwell Clinic, which is focused on ensuring immigrants who choose to make
a home in Mobile, AL, are equipped with knowledge and resources to be
successful. Residents will also be supported if another community service
opportunity is identified. Resident feedback will be solicited throughout
the program so that each learner will be positioned to help us improve
the experience for future residents. Further, we believe it is vital for
every resident to learn the business side of medicine such as clinic staffing
needs, private and government insurance programs, and physician value
amongst payers and employers. Lastly, residents in the primary care track
will be mentored on career planning and development. They will learn how
to draft a competitive CV and cover letter, how to interview effectively,
how to negotiate for a beginning salary, and how to navigate private practice.
Residents in the hospitalist track will begin their intern year by immersing
themselves in the inpatient medicine rotation at Mobile Infirmary. The
residents will rotate through inpatient neurology, inpatient oncology,
medicine consult service, surgical co-management, and inpatient geriatrics,
which will include time in a long-term acute care facility and in nursing
home facilities. Hospitalist track residents will be mentored to lead
multidisciplinary team meetings and will complete rotations through the
geriatric psychiatry unit in the hospitalist curriculum. A POCUS-specific
experience will be an integral aspect of this track, as well. Residents
will be required to conduct a quality improvement project with mentorship
from one of our hospitalist faculty members and with consultation from
the Mobile Infirmary quality improvement team. Hospitalist residents will
also be exposed to preoperative clinics, telemedicine, home health/hospice;
and addiction medicine. In year three, residents will undertake a capstone
Hospitalist preceptorship experience.
