What Is Obstetrics?
Obstetrics is the study of pregnancy and the birthing process, and the medical practice related to birthing and postpartum care. Obstetricians are usually specialists in their field and handle pre-natal, birthing post-partum care. They provide comprehensive medical care to women throughout their pregnancy experience.
Pre-natal Care
The pre-natal care your obstetrician will provide includes screenings of your baby in the womb to ensure proper pre-natal development, monitoring pre-natal and the maternal health and ensuring the mother’s health lifestyle ensures pre-natal health. This can involve treating diseases the mother suffers from such as diabetes and heart conditions and helping the mother to cope with pregnancy-related conditions such as morning sickness and pain. An obstetrician will also advise their patients on proper pregnancy routines, the birthing process, and fetal and newborn development. They can also make referrals to parenting resources that you and your spouse can participate in.

The Birthing Process
After guiding you through the pre-natal process, your obstetrician will also deliver your baby if you desire or refer you to a midwife. Working together with a delivery team, your obstetrician will guide you through delivery and ensure your baby is health and cared for as they are born. Obstetricians usually work with a team of physician’s assistants and nurses to ensure a smooth birth process.

Post-Partum Care
Obstetricians are also responsible for handling new mother’s post-partum care. The purpose of post-partum care is to ensure that the mother and child both remain health and that the mother is supported in providing proper care to her new baby. This can include educational courses for the new mother, lifestyle counseling and regular checkups for the mother and newborn to ensure the newborn is properly developing and the mother is healing from giving birth.
Pregnancy Disorders
Obstetricians also treat complications that can arise from pregnancy. These can include:
- Ectopic pregnancies
- Miscarriages
- Medical conditions of the mother
- Intrauterine medical conditions
- Preeclampsia
