Mobile Infirmary Launches New General Surgery Residency Program

Mobile Infirmary, an affiliate of Infirmary Health, has received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to launch a General Surgery Residency Program beginning in July 2026.

Over the course of five years, the program will train a total of 15 general surgery residents across Infirmary Health’s network of facilities. Residents will gain extensive hands-on experience, completing over 1,000 surgical cases across a broad range of specialties including alimentary tract, bariatrics, the abdomen and its contents, breast, skin and soft tissue, endocrine system, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, surgical oncology, trauma and emergency surgery, thoracic, and vascular surgery.

“We are excited to welcome another residency program to Mobile Infirmary,” said Susan Boudreau, President of Mobile Infirmary. “Our commitment to training future physicians for our community is second to none. This new program not only addresses the current need for general surgeons in our region but also ensures we are investing in the future of healthcare.”

The program will be led by Derek E. Robinson, MD, a highly respected surgical educator and clinician. Dr. Robinson is a graduate of the University of Alabama and the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at Brookwood Baptist Health, where he later served as Associate Program Director for over a decade.

Dr. Robinson brings a wealth of clinical experience to the program, including endocrine and gastrointestinal surgery, vascular access, wound care, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Known for his technical skill and patient-centered approach, he is equally passionate about education.

“Teaching residents isn’t just part of my job, it’s a privilege,” said Dr. Robinson. “Helping shape the next generation of surgeons is the most meaningful work I’ve done in my career.”
