Mahjong for Memory Raises $10,500 for Alzheimer's Association

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — More than 100 Mahjong players gathered at Fairhope Yacht Club on Sunday, June 28, for the 2nd Annual Mahjong for Memory, hosted by Infirmary Health and Coastal Medical Clinic neurologist Dr. Elizabeth Minto. Through the generosity of players, sponsors and donors, the event raised $10,500 for the Alzheimer's Association to support Alzheimer's research, advocacy and resources for patients and caregivers.

Inspired by this year's Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month theme, "Do what you love to end Alzheimer's," the event continues to grow as a community fundraiser centered around a shared love of Mahjong and a commitment to advancing Alzheimer's awareness.

With the support of Thomas Hospital, which sponsored the event venue, registration quickly surpassed Dr. Minto's goal of 80 players. By event day, 108 participants filled the room for an afternoon of friendly competition, fellowship and philanthropy. More than 100 additional supporters also contributed through online donations using social media and the Alzheimer's Association fundraising platform.

What began as a weekly Mahjong game among friends has evolved into an annual fundraiser. Dr. Minto and eight friends formed the "Mahj Squad" in early 2024 before launching the inaugural Mahjong for Memory fundraiser in 2025. That event welcomed 48 players and raised approximately $7,000 for the Alzheimer's Association.

"This cause is personal to me, as not only am I a neurologist who treats patients experiencing Alzheimer's disease every day, I am also the daughter and granddaughter of Alzheimer's patients," said Dr. Minto. "Doing something productive for this organization that does so much to support research as well as caregiver resources brings me tremendous joy."

Players of all experience levels participated throughout the afternoon, which also featured a raffle supported by donations from local businesses, including Harvest Jewels, Maragild, MimoMahj and Mad for Monograms, along with a tablescape competition. The "Gone Mahjin'" team earned top honors for its fishing-themed display.

"It is truly gratifying to have an employer that supports a passion project like this one," said Dr. Minto. "I hope the third annual Mahjong for Memory will make an even bigger impact, but this year will be hard to top."
