Infirmary Health is committed to providing people with diabetes tools to manage the disease and experience a higher quality of life. Infirmary Health offers two convenient centers: the Diabetes Education and Resource Center located in Mobile and the Thomas Hospital Diabetes Center located in Fairhope; both are recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

Diabetes Education and Resource Center (DERC), Mobile Infirmary

DERC provides diabetes education to patients diagnosed with Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes.  This center is directed by a board-certified endocrinologist, a doctor specialized in treating diabetes and staffed by registered dietitians and registered nurses who are also certified diabetes educators. The center provides both individual and group education sessions designed to meet patient’s specific needs.

  • Blood Glucose Monitoring
  • Diabetes Medication Instruction
  • Exercise Benefits
  • Complication Prevention
  • Stress Management and Behavior Change

A physician referral is required for all programs. Appointments are required for the education sessions. Fees for services are covered by most insurance companies. The Inpatient Diabetes Education and Resource Center provides services to Mobile Infirmary patients after discharge.  The diabetes education assists patients to continue safe practices at home. Educational materials provided are supported by the American Diabetes Association literature. Thomas Hospital Diabetes Center, Thomas Hospital

Thomas Hospital Diabetes Center provides healthcare education to patients diagnosed with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The Diabetes Center is staffed by a licensed registered dietitian, registered nurses who have received special training in diabetes management and two certified diabetes educators.  Participants in the diabetes management program are taught to control their disease with healthy diets, regular exercise, medication and monitoring. The center offers group and individual instructions for:

  • Type 1 or 2 diabetes (ages 12 and older)
  • Diabetes meal planning
  • Insulin instructions
  • Insulin pump instructions
  • Gestational diabetes

A physician referral is required for all programs. Appointments are required for the education sessions. Fees for services are covered by most insurance companies.

Hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
