Mobile Infirmary Expands Neurological care with Continuous EEG Monitoring

MOBILE, Ala. — Mobile Infirmary now offers continuous electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring, expanding access to advanced neurological care for critically ill patients. The around-the-clock service tracks brain activity in patients experiencing seizures, strokes and other neurological emergencies, helping clinicians detect changes that may not produce visible symptoms.

Unlike a traditional EEG, which records brain activity for a limited period, continuous EEG provides ongoing monitoring that can reveal neurological changes that might otherwise go undetected.

“This technology allows us to monitor seizures in real time, adjust medications more quickly and better determine whether changes in a patient’s condition are related to seizures or other neurological causes,” explained Dr. John Andrew Cox, medical director of Mobile Infirmary’s Stroke Program.

Continuous EEG monitoring is particularly valuable for detecting nonconvulsive seizures, which can occur without visible symptoms. It also helps clinicians evaluate unexplained changes in consciousness and monitor patients recovering from a stroke or cardiac arrest.

“We are proud to expand access to continuous EEG monitoring locally, allowing more patients to receive advanced neurological care close to home,” Cox said. “This is a limited resource in our region and a critical capability for our Neuro ICU. It allows us to provide the highest level of care for patients with epilepsy and other complex neurological conditions, reducing the need for transfers outside the region.”

The addition of continuous EEG monitoring further strengthens Mobile Infirmary’s comprehensive neurological and stroke care services.
